My wife’s Sienna minivan has a motorized lift back, and the motor has failed (allegedly) out of warranty. Some cheap fuck MODERN TOYOTA horseshit plastic panel collapsed under the front bumper and is dragging on the ground. They want $1500 for this shit.

I expect to spend money on a 35 year old Sunchaser. I bought a fully loaded minivan 4 years ago. Toyota, what happened to you?

Does it work like a normal lift now on struts or is it now completely inoperable?

4 years ago? There’s you go! It’s time to trade that sucker in and buy the best and shiniest new model. $3500 in repairs? Or $3500 down on an awesome new 75 month payment??

(Please don’t take that seriously.)

The more I think about it though.. Restoring my 20 year old pickup would run about $8500. That would make Crusty look and perform pretty good. Or I can spend $25,000 on a 4 year old truck that does all the same things I ask of Crusty.

Sorry! Tangent..

I guess your wife should have bought a Sunchaser instead.

Hmm... Power tail gate on my Mercedes works perfectly at ten years old...

I think it’s the more things on a modern car rather than the modern car itself. A base spec or just above has basic but necessary items while higher spec models have much more toys and stuff, more to go wrong.

And with the cost of repairing these items, it gets scarily expensive, fast.

The rear light alone for mine is £200 and that is only the main part of the two part rear light cluster.

My mother has never had lift gate trouble with her 3 Benzes each owned 5 years. The front panel thing is probably too many driveway/ramp smacks finally breaking something. That one I’m not surprised at all.

I find Lithia Toyota to be reasonable to get OEM parts.

Even though I live in Australia, I can get some parts from them cheaper than Toyota Australia after shipping and tax.

If it’s just a plastic under-tray it’s definitely something you can install yourself.

Our Passat Wagon has a power tailgate. I find it annoying as hell. At one point the bolts holding the lift mechanism to the hinge snapped off. The dealer wanted $700 to replace the hinges. I took the hinge off, drilled out the bolts, bought a tap to chase the threads and some new bolts and had it fixed for $5.

Now it works correctly, but is still annoying as heck to use!

Are you really blaming modern cars for your wife running into things and breaking the splash guards?

More toys, more to break. Just be glad you don’t have an Avalon with the motorized rear sun shade. That’s a solid $1k+ just for the part, no labor. Or a newer Land Cruiser or 4Runner where the brake master cylinder, booster, and all of the computers running it are all one unit that costs $1500 for the part alone. Or a pushbutton start vehicle where the key fob is like $300, the physical emergency key that goes in it is another $150 that has to be laser-cut and ordered in, then programmed to your vehicle for another $150 in labor. Over $500 for a damn key. I can go to any hardware store and get new keys for my cars for MAYBE $7.

As my Grandmother always said, “it’s just one more thing to break.”

Unless the mounting points are FUBAR’d, fixing the splash shield is simple. Go online and order one, oem or not, hell even used is fine, and bolt it back up.

Obviously the motor shouldn’t have failed. Why are they saying its out of warranty? Honestly for that I would fix it myself too.
